The fire continues to spread to the south and east and has grown to 73,089 acres, while containment remains at 40%. Other than causing poor air quality, this fire is not a threat to the Preserve at this time.

Winds from the south are forecast for this evening and air quality on the Preserve for Wednesday, September 9, 2020 may reach unhealthy conditions.  Further updates will be provided.

Please contact Forrest Arthur (831) 229-1125 or Karen Baxter (831) 238-8335 for more information.

CALFIRE dozer operators continue to reinforce containment lines established during the 2016 Soberanes fire. The fire still remains near the old San Clemente Dam site which is approximately 1.25 miles from the Preserve. Today’s incident map showing the perimeter of the fire at 4,700 acres can be found HERE. At this time, the Preserve is not in danger from this fire. 0% containment.

The River fire, in the Salinas area, stands at approximately 40,000 acres. This fire is actively burning in all directions; yet, it remains several miles away and is of no threat to the Preserve at this time. 9% contained

For local air quality information, please visit the Monterey Bay Air Resources District web page HERE

We are in constant communications with the Fire Chief and staff will keep the community apprised on our situation. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Forrest Arthur at (831) 229-1125.

Due to excessive heat, today remains a "Red Flag" Day on the Preserve. This means conditions are ideal for fire combustion and rapid spread.

  • Call 9-1-1 immediately in case of a Fire or Medical Emergency.
  • NO off-road driving or parking until appropriate mowing or grading is complete.
  •  Refrain from any activities in naturalized areas that may cause combustion or sparking (i.e. mowing, welding, digging, etc.). Restricting these activities is especially critical when temperatures are high (above 85 degrees) and humidity levels are low (below 30%).  When high temps and low humidity situations occur, simply follow the general "rule of thumb", advising no restricted activity between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
  • Open fires or barbequing in naturalized areas is strictly prohibited.
  • Ensure that your personal fire extinguishers are properly charged and ready for use.
  • Rest in shaded areas and maintain hydration to help prevent heat illness.

A new fire has been reported on Cachagua Road and Sky Ranch Road past Carmel Valley Village. This fire is several miles to the east of the Preserve. The fire is currently at 30-40 acres, is rapidly burning, and air support is enroute. The Preserve is not in danger from this fire or the River Fire at this time.

Air quality is still compromised due to the River Fire and we recommend limited outdoor activity for those with health concerns. For local air quality information, please visit the Monterey Bay Air Resources District web page HERE.

Staff will continue to communicate with Fire Officials and update the community as new information develops on both this fire, as well as the River Fire in Salinas.

Preserve Advisory

Monday, August 17, 2020 - 8:53 a.m.

As of 6:00 a.m. this morning, the River Fire was at 2,800 acres and remains at 10% contained. Overnight, the fire moved southward and currently threatens over 1,500 homes. The Preserve remains in no danger from the River Fire, however smoke from the fire will cause air quality concerns for today and potentially the near future.

We recommend limited outdoor activity for those with health concerns. For local air quality information, please visit the Monterey Bay Air Resources District web page HERE.

Today is a "Red Flag" Day on the Preserve. This means conditions are ideal for fire combustion and rapid spread.

The lightning storm caused a fire in the Salinas area on Toro Peak, which is approximately 5 miles off the Preserve. Our Fire Chief, Michael Urquides, informs us that Monterey County Regional Fire is supporting CALFIRE and plenty of resources are available. We may smell smoke or see helicopters in the distance, however the Preserve is not in danger at this time. We will update the community if the situation changes.

Heat Advisory

May 25 thru May 28, 2020
